Biography

Soprano Jeeyeun Kim began her musical journey at the age of nine as a member of the Seoul Metropolitan Children’s Choir, where she performed for nine consecutive years. During this time, she appeared in numerous prestigious events, including the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 1986 Asian Games celebratory concerts, a performance at the Blue House (the Korean presidential residence), and international tours across the United States, Southeast Asia, and Japan. She was also part of a historic milestone as a member of the first children’s choir in Korea to perform Handel’s Messiah in its entirety.

At the age of 10, she narrated Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf alongside the Seoul Metropolitan Orchestra, featuring a live bassoonist—a performance that left a lasting impression on her artistic identity. In 1988, she joined performances of Bizet’s Carmen and Puccini’s Turandot with a British opera company, invited by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in celebration of the Seoul Olympics. In 1985, she played the title role of the “Little Groom” in a dance theater production by the Seoul Metropolitan Dance Company, a production that combined traditional Korean storytelling with music and choreography.

She went on to study voice under Professor Younggeum Hwang at Yonsei University, and later earned dual Master’s degrees in Voice and Choral Conducting from Pittsburg State University, studying conducting with Dr. Susan Marchant. Jeeyeun made her Carnegie Hall debut in the Winner’s Recital of the Barry Alexander International Vocal Competition, and earned First Prize in the West Central Region of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (2012) and the Southeast Kansas Symphony Concerto Aria Competition.

Her operatic credits include leading roles such as Suor Angelica (Suor Angelica), Mimi (La Bohème), Gilda (Rigoletto), and Donna Anna (Don Giovanni). The Morning praised her as “a performer with a natural and excellent stage presence, a deep understanding of her roles, and a rich vocal tone.”

In sacred music, Jeeyeun has performed Josquin des Prez’s Missa Pange Lingua, Schubert’s Missa Solemnis in A-flat, Fauré’s Requiem, and Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de confessore, K. 339, always bringing stylistic authenticity and emotional depth. She served for four years as Soprano Section Leader at Village Presbyterian Church in Kansas, one of the top ten Presbyterian churches in the U.S.

Now based in Atlanta, she continues to perform and serve the community as Artistic Director of Soom Soloist Ensemble, where she curates projects such as the Korean Art Song concert “Welcome”, brunch series “Aperitive!”, and “Gentleness in Greatness”, a tribute to women composers. Through these works, she remains committed to bridging cultures and generations through meaningful, accessible classical music.
